TFY: CH 4 INFERENCES
When we infer, we derive by reasoning, guess, or conclude, with no facts available or determined. You must learn how to distinguish fact from inferences. Facts are actual descriptions of something, where inferences are more like interpretations of something. Inferences can go right or wrong. When using inferences right you will find that inferences are essential part of thinking to help you discover new facts. Generalizations are inferences based on observations that deal with recurrence, order and relationships. A topic sentence is a generalization that summarizes the main idea of a paragraph and is also a kind of conclusion.
